CLBC has just released a new plain language guide for self advocates called "Understanding Vulnerability". The booklet speaks to the importance of being aware of vulnerabilities so intentional safeguards can be planned to address them. read more....

New five-year collective agreement for DCLS

Last week, the employers and unionized employees in the community social services sector (including DCLS) in BC voted in favour of ratifying a new five-year collective agreement. The new agreement will be effective April 1, 2014 - March 31, 2019. "The agreements provide the sector with long-term labour stability for the next five-years, ensuring no service delivery interruptions to clients and their families." said CSSEA CEO Gentil Mateus. The contract was ratified by an 85.6% vote among workers in the sector and by a 96% vote of employers. read more....

Did you see this weekend's Vancouver Sun? It includes a great article about hiring people with developmental disabilities, and the positive outcomes for businesses that do so. DCLS continues to provide customized employment to employment-seekers following the pilot project mentioned in the article. We are proud to report that following the successful pilot, people we support have maintained employment, and the average wage among them has risen almost 17% in the past two years. read more....

The team at Solutions Employment has been working hard to put together a new framework to support youth with developmental disabilities to transition to employment. The Leading Employment & Achieving Possibilities (LEAP) pilot project will partner peer coaches with job seekers to help facilitate the transition from school to employment.
